AI mention rate: what it measures and how to raise it
Updated 2026-09-03
Mention rate is the simplest question in AI visibility: when someone asks an AI engine about your category, does it name your brand at all? Ask ChatGPT for the best options for a category like yours across a set of real buyer questions, and mention rate is the share of those answers that include you.
Why mention rate carries half the score
ASRM's composite AI visibility score weighs three signals: 50 percent mention rate, 25 percent answer position, and 25 percent share of voice. Mention rate gets the largest weight because it is the gate the other two sit behind. Answer position only means something once you are already named, and share of voice only counts mentions that happened. An engine that never names your brand makes the other two signals irrelevant, so mention rate is where the score starts.
How ASRM measures it
ASRM asks real buyer questions from your category across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini and checks each answer for whether your brand is named. Mention rate is the share of those answers that name you, tracked per engine so you can see where you are strong and where you are absent, not just an average that hides the gap.
What raises mention rate
- State plainly what you are and who you are for, in the same category language everywhere you are described.
- Earn coverage in the reviews, comparisons, and directories that engines learn your category from; if the top sources skip you, answers composed from them do too.
- Keep your naming and positioning consistent over time, since a moving target is harder for a model to learn confidently.
- Publish pages that answer buyer questions directly, since retrieval-heavy engines can surface a mention from a page they find at answer time, not only from training.
Mention rate versus the other signals
Mention rate answers a yes or no question: named or not. It does not say how prominently you were named, which is answer position, or how much of the attention was yours versus competitors', which is share of voice. It is also different from citation rate, how often an engine links your site as a source when it searches live; a brand can be mentioned often with few citations, or cited without being named in the surrounding text. All four are worth tracking separately because each points at a different fix.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a good mention rate?
- It depends on how competitive your category is. The useful comparison is against the competitors named in the same answers, and your own trend over time, not a universal number.
- Can mention rate hit 100 percent?
- In theory, if every answer checked names your brand. In practice, most brands are absent from at least some answers, especially in competitive categories with several established rivals, so gains tend to come gradually rather than all at once.
