AI visibility score: what it measures and how to raise it

The two ingredients

Mention rate: of the category questions asked, in what share of answers does the engine name your brand? This is the headline signal. It captures whether engines think of you at all when composing an answer in your space.

Citation rate: when an engine searches the live web to answer, how often does it cite your website as a source? Citations measure something different from mentions: whether engines treat your site as authoritative enough to send people to. An engine that answers without searching cannot cite anyone, so citation rate is only measured on answers where live search actually ran.

What a good score looks like

There is no universal passing grade because categories differ in competitiveness. The useful readings are relative: your trajectory over time, and your standing against the competitors named in your category answers. A 40 in a crowded category with rising trend beats a static 60 in an empty one. Direction and gaps matter more than the absolute number.

Raising the citation rate
