The AI visibility checklist

Updated 2026-08-10

AI visibility work touches a lot of surfaces at once: your own site, the pages other people write about you, and how you show up when the engines search live. This checklist puts the work in a practical order, from fastest to fix to slowest to compound.

1. Measure your baseline first

  • Run a scan across the major engines before changing anything, so you have a before to compare against.
  • Note which engines mention you and which skip you entirely; the pattern points at the cause.
  • Note which competitors show up in your place; they are the specific benchmark, not an abstract one.

2. Fix positioning clarity

  • State what you are and who you are for in plain category language, high on your homepage.
  • Match the language buyers actually use, not internal or invented category terms.
  • Keep the description consistent everywhere it appears: your site, your bio pages, your listings.

3. Build third-party presence

  • Get listed on the review and directory sites your category already trusts.
  • Pursue inclusion in existing comparison and best-of articles before writing your own.
  • Check that every listing describes you the same way; conflicting descriptions confuse engines and buyers alike.

4. Publish citable content

  • Write pages that answer specific buyer questions directly, near the top, before any brand framing.
  • Cover definitional and comparative topics, not only product marketing pages.
  • Add FAQ and Organization schema so pages are easy to lift and attribute correctly.

5. Clean up entity hygiene

  • Use the same brand name and spelling everywhere; inconsistent naming splits your footprint.
  • Keep your own site's facts (pricing, features, positioning) current; stale pages teach engines the wrong thing.
  • Make sure your site is not blocking the crawlers AI engines use to fetch pages at answer time.

6. Set a measurement cadence

  • Re-check on a schedule, since answers shift as models update and sources change.
  • Track per engine, not just an average; being strong on one and absent on another is common and needs different fixes.
  • Watch which competitors gain or lose ground alongside you, not just your own number in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

Which item on the checklist matters most?
It depends on your diagnosis. A brand engines cannot categorize needs positioning work first. A brand with clear positioning but no third-party coverage needs that instead. The baseline scan tells you which.
How long does working through the full checklist take?
Positioning and entity fixes can ship in days. Third-party presence and citable content compound over weeks to months, since they depend on other sites publishing and engines re-crawling.
