Generative engine optimization (GEO): a practical guide
Updated 2026-07-28
Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the practice of earning presence in AI-generated answers. Where SEO optimizes pages to rank in a list of links, GEO optimizes a brand to be named, cited, and recommended inside the single composed answer an AI engine returns. The term sits alongside AEO, answer engine optimization, and LLM SEO; the ideas are the same.
Why GEO exists
AI engines collapse the search results page into one answer. That changes the economics of visibility. In classic search, position eight still gets some clicks. In a composed answer, brands are either present or absent. The answer typically names a few options and cites a few sources, so the winner-take-most dynamics are stronger than in ranked lists.
How engines choose what to say
Two mechanisms drive every answer. First, model knowledge: what the engine learned about your category and brand during training, shaped by how the public web described you up to its cutoff. Second, retrieval: engines with live search fetch current pages at answer time and cite them. Perplexity and Gemini lean hard on retrieval; ChatGPT and Claude use it when the question calls for it.
GEO works on both. Consistent third-party descriptions improve what models learn. Citable, well-structured pages win the retrieval slots. Neither is fast magic; both are compounding assets.
The practical GEO playbook
- Positioning clarity: your site states what you are, for whom, in plain category language.
- Third-party presence: reviews, directories, comparisons, and lists that describe you consistently.
- Citable content: pages that define, compare, and answer directly, with clean structure and schema.
- Entity hygiene: consistent naming, an Organization schema, and an accurate footprint on the sources engines trust.
- Measurement: recurring checks of who gets named and cited for your buyers' questions, per engine.
Measuring GEO
GEO without measurement is guessing. The measurement loop is simple: ask the engines real buyer questions, record mentions and citations, track the rates over time, and watch which competitors hold the slots you want. That loop tells you whether the work above is moving anything.
ASRM exists to run that loop continuously. Start with the free scan: a 0 to 100 AI visibility score for your domain, the competitor gaps, and the sources engines cite in your category.
Frequently asked questions
- Is GEO replacing SEO?
- No. They overlap and reinforce each other. Strong SEO assets like authoritative content and clean structure also feed AI answers. GEO adds the parts SEO ignores: entity clarity, third-party description, and answer-level measurement.
- What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
- Mostly vocabulary. Both describe optimizing for AI-composed answers. GEO emphasizes generative engines like ChatGPT; AEO is sometimes used more broadly to include featured snippets and voice assistants.
