Answer position: the AI visibility signal most people miss
Updated 2026-08-10
Most brands checking their AI visibility ask one question: did the engine name us at all? That is mention rate, and it matters, but it misses something buyers feel even when they cannot name it. Being the fourth brand mentioned in a list of four reads very differently than being the first. Answer position measures where you land, not just whether you land.
Why position is a separate signal
Buyers skim. When an engine names several brands in an answer, the ones named first get more attention, more consideration, and more clicks on any cited link. A brand that is mentioned in every answer but always last is technically visible and practically an afterthought. Mention rate cannot see that difference. Position can.
Position also reflects something mention rate does not: how confidently the engine associates your brand with the question. Engines tend to lead with the brand they consider the strongest match, then add others as options. Landing early is a signal that the engine treats you as a primary answer, not a footnote.
How ASRM measures it
ASRM's composite AI visibility score weighs three signals: 50 percent mention rate, whether you are named at all; 25 percent answer position, how early you land among the brands named; and 25 percent share of voice, your mentions against your named competitors' mentions. Position is scored across every answer where your brand appears, so one strong placement does not hide a pattern of trailing everywhere else.
What moves position
- Clear, specific positioning: engines lead with the brand whose fit is easiest to state in one line.
- Being the brand third-party sources mention first, not just mention at all, in the comparison content engines draw from.
- Category-specific strength: a brand that dominates one narrow use case often leads the answer for that use case, even against bigger competitors.
- Consistency: engines lead with the brand they can describe confidently, and confidence comes from seeing the same description repeated across sources.

Frequently asked questions
- Can a brand have a high mention rate and a low position score?
- Yes. It happens when an engine reliably includes a brand but treats it as a secondary option rather than a leading answer. The two signals are tracked separately for exactly this reason.
- Does answer position change often?
- It can move whenever the sources engines draw from change, or when a competitor sharpens its positioning. Tracking it over time shows the trend, not just a single answer's order.
