What is AI visibility?

Updated 2026-07-28

AI visibility is how often AI engines mention, cite, and recommend your brand when people ask them questions in your category. When a buyer asks ChatGPT for the best project management tool for agencies, some brands get named and linked. Most do not. AI visibility measures which side of that line you are on.

This matters because AI engines now sit between buyers and brands. A growing share of product research starts as a question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude instead of a search on Google. Those engines do not show ten blue links. They give one answer, name a handful of brands, and cite a handful of sources. If you are not in the answer, you are invisible to that buyer.

AI visibility is not the same as SEO

Ranking well on Google does not guarantee AI engines recommend you. Classic SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. AI engines compose a single answer from what their models learned in training and what live web search returns at answer time. They weigh different signals: whether trusted sources describe your brand clearly, whether comparison and review sites include you, and whether your own site states plainly what you do and who you serve.

That is why a brand can rank on page one for its category keyword and still never be named by ChatGPT. The overlap is real but partial. Treating AI visibility as a separate, measurable channel is the practical response.

How AI visibility is measured

The direct method is to ask the engines real buyer questions and record what comes back. For each question and each engine, you check two things: whether your brand is mentioned, and whether your website is cited as a source. Run enough questions across enough engines and you get a rate, not an anecdote.

Two signals matter most. Mention rate is how often the engine names your brand in category answers. Citation rate is how often the engine links your site as a source when it uses live web search. Combined, they say whether engines know you exist and whether they trust your site enough to send people to it.

How to check your own AI visibility

You can spot check by hand: ask each engine the questions your buyers ask and note who gets named. That works once, but answers shift as models update and sources change, and hand checks do not scale across engines and questions.

ASRM automates the measurement. The free scan asks the AI engines real buyer questions from your category and returns a 0 to 100 score built from your mention rate and citation rate, plus which competitors get recommended where you are absent. It takes about a minute and needs no signup.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI engines matter for visibility?
ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini cover most AI-assisted product research today. Perplexity and Gemini lean on live web search and citations; ChatGPT and Claude blend trained knowledge with optional search.
How often does AI visibility change?
Answers move whenever models update, engines change how they search, or the sources they rely on change. Weekly measurement is enough to catch meaningful movement without chasing noise.
Is AI visibility the same as generative engine optimization?
They are two sides of one loop. AI visibility is the measurement: where you stand. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of improving it.
