How to get ChatGPT to recommend your brand
Updated 2026-07-28
ChatGPT recommends brands it can identify confidently and describe accurately. It draws on two pools: what the model learned in training, and what live web search returns when the question triggers one. You influence both with the same underlying work: be described clearly, consistently, and by more than just your own website.
1. Say plainly what you are
Engines recommend brands they can categorize. If your homepage leads with a vague slogan, a model cannot place you in a category answer. State what you do, for whom, in plain words, high on the page. A one-line definition of your product in the first screen of your homepage does more for AI visibility than most clever copy.
2. Get described by third parties
Engines weight independent sources heavily. Comparison posts, review sites, directories, and industry lists teach models and searchers what you are. If the top comparison articles in your category do not include you, engines composing answers from those articles will not include you either.
- Get listed on the review and directory sites your category already trusts.
- Pursue inclusion in existing comparison and best-of articles before writing your own.
- Keep your descriptions consistent everywhere: same category words, same positioning.
3. Publish citable pages
When engines search the live web, they cite pages that answer the question directly. Pages that define terms, compare options honestly, publish concrete numbers, or answer specific questions get cited. Thin marketing pages do not. Structure helps too: clear headings, direct answers near the top, FAQ blocks, and schema markup all make a page easier to lift into an answer.
4. Measure, then fix the gaps
You cannot manage what you do not measure. Ask the engines the questions your buyers actually ask and record who gets named. Do it across engines: being visible on ChatGPT while absent on Perplexity is common, and the fixes differ. The gaps tell you exactly which of the steps above to work on first.
ASRM runs this measurement for you. The free scan asks real buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini and shows your score, the competitors taking your slots, and the sources engines cite in your category. It is free and takes about a minute.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your brand?
- No. Engine answers are not paid placements today. Visibility comes from how clearly and widely your brand is described across the web.
- How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
- Citation-driven improvements can show up within weeks because they depend on live search. Training-data improvements move slower, on model release cycles. Measure weekly and expect gradual movement.
